Why I Am A Catholic Author & Artist
Art has the ability to move people. It influences the heart. With my storytelling & artwork, I hope to move people in ways that logic can't. Logic influences the mind, but not the heart. Beauty moves people in ways that logic can't. That is why I try to live out American artist Makoto Fujimura's call to culture care instead of culture wars. Fujimura is a Christian and he sees the culture not as a territory to be won, but a garden to be cultivated.
In a Tweet, he once pointed out the example of President Abraham Lincoln. While Lincoln was vehemently opposed to slavery, a huge evil in American culture and society, he was also, in Fujimura's words, "the greatest culture care President we've ever had." Fujimura pointed out that Lincoln was shot and killed while watching a play in a theatre. But Fujimura is not the only one who calls artists to appeal to humanity's better instincts and urges. The Catholic Church has consistently called artists to do so, from St. Francis de Sales to Pope St. John Paul II and beyond. As The Mandalorian says, "This is the Way."
Please pray for me as I strive to live out the call of culture care and lift others up.
