Those Expiration Dates on the Food You Buy? Thank Al Capone.
You're probably thinking, "What? Al Capone is responsible for expiration dates on food?" At least, in the States, yes, he is. I've been to Alcatraz and seen the cell block where he served time for tax evasion (for those of you who aren't great with history, Al Capone was, undoubtedly guilty for other crimes but they could never be proven in court). But people are complicated and even people like ol' Scarface tend to have a good side. I know it probably sounds strange that Al Capone would order hits on rival mobs without remorse or guilt, and yet care when someone got sick from drinking milk that had gone bad. He was cold, but apparently, he wasn't so completely devoid of humanity that he didn't care if someone he knew got sick from spoiled milk. In fact, he lobbied to get milk crates and bottles labeled with an expiration date.
