My Top 10 Movies That Show Logos in Romance
True romantic love isn't "you complete me. You make me feel less like a monster." But it isn't just "I'll spend the rest of my life making you happy," either.
It's a combination of "you understand me. You accept me. You love me," and "I understand you. I accept you. I love you. I want to be with you. And I'll spend the rest of my life making you happy."
A romantic "I love you" is not just about "you," as in the other person. It's about "us."
Do you know what eros and agape become when they are combined? They become logos. Here are my top 10 movies that demonstrate logos in romances.
10) The Phantom of the Opera (2004) & The Phantom of the Opera at the Royal Albert Hall
Both the Phantom and Raoul display logos. I'll address how the Phantom does so in a moment. But let's start with Raoul, shall we?
Raoul desires to be united with Christine, but he's also willing to make sacrifices for her. In the first verse of "All I Ask of You," He tells her, "Let me comfort you. Let me protect you. Let me be your freedom. Let me love you." They both sing, "Say you'll share with me one love, one lifetime. Share each day with me each night, each morning,"
In "The Final Lair," Raoul is willing to die in order to fulfill his promise to be Christine's freedom. Raoul wants Christine's love, sure, but he cares more about her wellbeing and what she wants than whether or not she understands him, accepts him, and loves him.
The Phantom, despite his lust and his utilitarian love for Christine, exhibits eros towards her as well. He desires to be united with her and share his life with her.
The Phantom doesn't get the selfless part about love until Christine shows him unconditional love. Then, he lets her go, but reaffirms that he loves her.
Kudos to the Phantom for letting Christine go, even though it was hard for him to do.

3) The Rise of Skywalker
Ben Solo "Kylo Ren" wants to be with Rey. He has respected her since she pushed him out of her mind and beat him in a lightsaber duel in The Force Awakens. But like him, she is a lonely soul. They are both descendants of powerful Sith Lords: he is the grandson of Darth Vader and she is the grandaughter of Emperor Palpatine, aka Darth Sidious. He spends a good portion of The Rise of Skywalker searching for Rey. On his Stardestroyer above Kijimi, he renews his offer to her from The Last Jedi to join him and rule the galaxy to together.
Even after his remdemption, his love for her remains. But agape holds his eros in check when he gives his life to revive Rey.
2) No Time To Die
James Bond desires to be united with his beloved, Madeleine Swann and their daughter, Mathilde. But this eros is balanced with agape when James makes the ultimate sacrifice to protect his family.
Surprising to find logos, let alone a long-term romantic relationship in a Bond film, isn't it?
1) Beauty and the Beast (1991 & 2017)
In some ways, The Phantom of the Opera is a mature and darker version of Beauty and the Beast, except that the physically ugly character in Phantom is not under a magic spell for selfishness. And the Phantom does not get to be with the beautiful and kind heroine at the end. And the Phantom doesn't live in a castle or have servants.
