Halloween's Catholic Roots

10/29/2021

Halloween is Catholic. Halloween is Christian.

Let me tell you about the Catholic roots of this holiday and hopefully, many of you will see that it is not Satan's holiday.

First, the word Halloween comes from the words "All Hallow's Eve." This is because October 31st is the day before All Saints Day, which is on November 1st.

Now, you may not know this but the tradition of trick or treating comes from English Catholics.
A long time ago, children would go door-to-door, asking for food. English Catholics would make soul cakes and give them to the children, asking them to pray for the souls of the departed and assure them of their prayers for the souls of the departed.

As for dressing up in costume, that comes from our French brothers and sisters in Christ! Our French Catholic brethren would dress up as the saints and blesseds.

In fact, making and displaying Jack-O-Lanterns is also a Catholic tradition.

Now, is there witchcraft and occult practices taking place on Halloween night? Of course! But let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater and say Halloween is the Devil's holiday because of it.
Halloween is a Catholic holiday and the Devil is a master at attacking and corrupting what is good.
Instead of refusing to celebrate Halloween because of all the witchcraft and evil symbolism, we Catholics should make Halloween Catholic again. We need to take back our holiday and make it a celebration of all that is good.So now, my fellow Catholics, if you plan on dressing up and going trick or treating, and making and displaying Jack-O-Lanterns, go for it.

And you don't have to dress up as a saint or blessed if you don't want to. God gave us 10 commandments, not 10,000. So if you want to dress up as Thor, Loki, Hawkeye, Captain America, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Black Widow, Sylvie, Tauriel, Arwen, Rey, Padme, Elizabeth Swann-Turner or your favorite character from pop culture (as long as it's not immoral), go for it! God created us partly to have fun and enjoy ourselves.

As for me, I'll be handing out candy to the few trick or treaters who come to my door (I don't get very many trick or treaters on Halloween) and watching Pirates of the Caribbean 1.

Comments Hey, let's chat and have some good discussions! In order to have good conversations, there needs to be some rules. 1) Be polite, charitable, and civil 2) Long comments are most welcome! 3) Please one comment at a time. I do better with one-on-one conversations. Positive comments make my day! I read all the comments and will do my best to respond to them. May God bless you and keep you! And if you're not religious, I wish you all the best!
