If you want to incite controversy in Christian circles, mentioning Harry Potter will easily do the trick. But I advise you not to. Causing division within the Body of Christ is strongly condemned in the New Testament.

Some Christians are of the opinion that the Harry Potter stories are nothing to worry about while others are worried about the magic, saying it's a gateway to the occult.

It's not. Occult magick involves invoking a demon or other spirit, and honing hidden powers over time. Anyone can become an occultist and use magick.

In Harry Potter, you're either born with the abilities to use magic or you're not. In fact, here's the Blood Status list.

Pureblood: A person with innate magical abilities and magical relatives

Halfblood: A person with innate magical abilities, has one parent who's magical and one parent who's Muggle or Muggle-born

Muggle-born: A person with innate magical abilities but has Muggle parents

Squib: A person from a magical family, but has no innate magical abilities

Muggle/No-Maj: A person with no innate magical abilities and no magical parents

And yes, people in the Harry Potter universe do go to magic schools to hone their powers, but Squibs and Muggles can't attend such a school since they aren't born with magical abilities.

Second, the spells & magic in the Harry Potter stories do not involve summoning demons and other spirits that are not of God. Catholic teacher Amy MacKinnon says the magic in Harry Potter is fairy tale magic. As for the Divination aspect, Professor Trelawny realizes how useless divination is in the seventh book. And then there's the alleged "necromancy." For those of you who don't know, necromancy is summoning the spirits of the dead to talk to them.  Harry's loved ones who have passed away appearing to him via the Resurrection Stone is a result of handing himself over to Voldemort. And when that happened, Harry was about to make the ultimate sacrifice to weaken one of the greatest threats the Wizarding World had ever faced. So he was understandably scared and he deserved some comfort from his loved ones who had taken the path that we all must take eventually.

Religion of any kind is notably absent from these stories. So before you complain about the absence of the Judeo-Christian God, Allah is not there, either. The world of Harry Potter is fictional and meant to be a world different than our own, even though it is set in actual England.

And if you need further evidence, I have one more thing.  I went to the Harry Potter land at Universal Studios in Orlando several years ago and I bought a Harry Potter wand while I was there. Well, it's really a replica of Hermione's wand, but you get my point. There was a time when I had behavorial therapy sessions at my house. So I showed my behavioral therapist my new wand and she asked me if the spells in Harry Potter actually work. The wand was resting on the table in front of me and so I picked it up. I pointed the wand at one of the Great Room windows and said, "Reducto!"  Nothing happened. And if the spell had worked, it would have shattered the window.* I cast a Harry Potter spell to show her that the spells aren't real and don't work.

*Yes, I could have used a less destructive spell, like Wingardium Leviosa on the TV remote to try to make it fly.
